Sadly, when taking a trip to New York City you won't see these World Trade Center Towers. Instead, you'll see a massive construction site surrounded by boarded walls with a few holes so tourists can look at the cranes pushing the earth around. Just nine years ago thousands died when planes flew into these buildings and left a hole in many of our hearts and believe it's something you never forget. I was doing a sports radio show at WFAN and it was all I could do to keep it together listening to caller after caller vent or cry or simply ask the question Why?
The other day I read one of the last pieces that Fareed Zakaria did for Newsweek Magazine where he tried to convince readers that Al Qaeda was not a threat and America overreacted to the September 11th attacks. What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say on Zakaria's part who was probably looking to stir it up as he exited for Time Magazine. Afterall controversy sells in a world of reality television just ask Snookie.
What happened on that awful day was no television show and you have to ask yourself how close have we come again to another attack? Sure you can blow off the underwear bomber or the nut who tired to take a chunk out of time square as fools, pawns or something else. What if they hadn't bumbled their attempts at killing innocent people? You can't have it both ways on this one and I'll tell you why this week on America Tonight.

Unemployment Rate August
Career Fairs like this one are a thread of hope to the thousands who are looking for a job in a tight economy. The jobless rate rose to 9.6 percent from 9.5 percent in July. The reason is more than a half-million Americans resumed their job searches in August, which drove up the jobless rate. Basically when the unemployed stop looking for work, they are no longer counted in the jobless rate. This also doesn't take into account the so called "underemployed" that number is in the range of 16.7 percent. Hiring has been weak for four months and sadly things don't look so good on the horizon. We'll talk about solutions on America Tonight this Monday on Labor Day.

Discovery Channel Hostage Gunman
Sadly this is becoming all too familiar in America. The nut holding the workplace hostage or the protester making a statement the wrong way. The photo you are looking at is just outside of the Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Springs, Maryland. Thankfully, most of the 1,900 people who work here were able to safely get away from the building; a handful not so lucky as they were held at gunpoint.
James J. Lee is the man who armed with guns and possibly a bomb had an agenda mostly a list of demands over programming about the environment. Lee was arrested once outside the building back in 2008 for throwing thousands of dollars into the air and shouting that the network did nothing to save the planet. Lee was shot and killed by police in the end after a four hour stand off. Tonight on America tonight throw in your two cents on whether you look over your shoulder at work?

Newborn Hurricane Earl threatens north Caribbean Meet Earl this is now a Category 4 Hurricane that crashed into some tiny islands across the northeastern Caribbean pealing off roofs with winds up to 135 miles an hour. Earl might make an unwanted entrance into the East Coast this week bringing some deadly rip currents. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami warned people on the coast from North Carolina to Maine to watch the storm.

Besides the storm we'll talk about two men who were arrested Monday at Amsterdam's Schiphol International Airport after a flight from Chicago sources say that the men have been charged with "preparation of a terrorist attack." Apparently the pair had "mock bombs' in their luggage. Any thoughts? Share them on America Tonight at 800-259-5791. We'll also talk with Kathleen Koch a former CNN reporter who has some thoughts on why her hometown of Mississippi hardly gets talked about after being ripped apart by Katrina five years ago.

Okay America do you have any idea what you are looking at right now? It's not a still from a sci-fi movie this could become our reality. X-ray vision from a van with a mounted backscatter "Gen 2 x-ray scanner" this baby can see through cars, trucks you name it and it can see it. American Science & Engineering, a Massachusetts company is selling them and so far has sold U.S. and foreign government agencies more than 500 machines. The rolling vans can be driven past neighboring vehicles to see their contents and so far The Department of Defense has bought most the machines used mostly for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq but law enforcement agencies have also used the vans to search for vehicle-based bombs in the U.S.

How far over the privacy line do these vans cross when they roll through the neighbor recording to a hard drive the images that it shoots. Forbes' Andy Greenberg did a great blog on the technology pointing out its uses and fears. How much of our privacy will we allow to be sucked away with cameras, body scanners and chips. We'll talk about it tonight on ATN. Plus the bed bug epidemic and Matthew Cossolotto a former congressional aide and speechwriter on why the numbers of representatives on the hill just don't add up.
